Orchis Nocturna: Official Biography

A Band Biography of Orchis Nocturna

Orchis Nocturna is a Christian doom metal band hailing from Florida and Alabama. The band is currently composed of two members: guitarist Jason Sullivan and vocalist Courtney Phillips. Courtney and Jason first met in 2009 after camping next to each other at Cornerstone Music Festival in Bushnell, IL. They kept in touch throughout the years as they pursued different projects until Jason reached out to Courtney about starting a Christian doom metal band in late March of 2025. By the end of April, the duo had recorded their first three demo tracks and named their new project Orchis Nocturna.

In a barren harvest field, a weary laborer groans yet rests in God’s heart;
in a lonely cemetery, a lingering spirit wanders and yearns for resurrection;
and in a dimlit cathedral, a selfish supplicant is overcome by divine Mercy.

Their debut EP titled Oratorium Echoes is expected to release this year and features three songs: Bitter Harvest, a gritty opener with blues and gospel influences, Memento Mori, a gothic ballad with haunting guitar lines and ethereal melodies, and Oratorium Echoes, a liturgical meditation with choral harmonies and transfiguring guitar themes. The word oratorium means “place of prayer.” While the EP’s title track evokes the expected image of a vaulted sanctum, all three lyrical settings depict biblically-consistent “places of prayer” as God is omnipresent, believers are His temples, and prayer is based on relation not location. All three tracks explore the unwavering brilliance of hope in the face of anguish, desolation, and utter ruin. The band’s sound is still developing, but their Oratorium Echoes EP is recommended for fans of bands such as Paramaecium, Haunted, Eight Bells, and The Third and the Mortal.

Someone Let Courtney Write the Band Bio

(Exhibit A of why this is a bad idea)

When most people try to think of something that comes out of both Florida and Alabama, a Christian doom metal band is not their first response—but give Orchis Nocturna a listen, and it could be yours. The band was founded by Jason Sullivan (guitar) and Courtney Phillips (vocals) in the spring of 2025. Their first EP, Oratorium Echoes, is being released sooner than it should but later than they want. It features three tracks: Bitter Harvest, a bluesy wail about the difficulties of farming; Memento Mori, a ghostly reminder that you’ll die eventually; and Oratorium Echoes, the title track that meditates on God’s mercy in Greek. If you want to bask in the briny swamp of sadness with alligators under a cypress tree, please don’t bring any electronics with you or you might get electrocuted.
